Designing a Staircase as Sculpture
A staircase is the one piece of furniture you can't move, can't restyle, and can't hide. It's the first thing you see when you walk in. So why do so many of them look like an afterthought?

When we designed ours, I wanted it to feel less like a way to get upstairs and more like a sculpture you happen to be able to climb. Every line, every material, the way the light falls on it — designed, not defaulted.
The bones of a house
This is the part of interior design I care about most: the structural, the built-in, the pieces that become part of the house and the story of the house. Anyone can throw cushions on a sofa. The magic is in the bones.
A staircase, a media wall, a hidden door, a stone basin — these are the pieces people remember, because they couldn't have bought them anywhere. They had to be designed.
If you're building or renovating and the structural pieces feel like the hardest part — that's exactly the part I love most.
